El cabo Marcelo Gramaccioli oriundo de Río Cuarto sufrió con rabia cuando vio que el “Belgrano” había desaparecido del radar. Iba cerca, a bordo del destructor “Piedrabuena”. Rescató náufragos esperando hallar a sus 3 amigos.
Empiezo a vivir la guerra en carne propia cuando se hunde el “Belgrano” —cuenta Marcelo Gramaccioli, que presenció de cerca cómo el crucero desapareció de los radares y de la faz del mar.
En 1982, tenía 20 años y era cabo segundo de Operaciones en el destructor ARA “Piedrabuena”, uno de los buques que escoltaban al “Belgrano” la jornada del 2 de mayo, cuando lo atacó el submarino británico HMS “Conqueror”, durante la guerra por las islas Malvinas.
—Sabés que cuando se pierde el contacto radar no es porque te alejaste mucho.
Algo pasó —advierte—. Estamos a unas 20 millas cuando vemos que se pierde la marcación. Ahí nos damos cuenta de que el crucero se está hundiendo.
Un torpedo le había arrancado 12 metros de proa y otro lo había herido de muerte más al centro, cerca de las máquinas. Eran las 4 de la tarde.
Gramaccioli sintió dolor y bronca cuando en el cuarto de Contramedidas de su buque se enteró del ataque. También angustia, porque entre los 1.093 tripulantes del crucero había 3 que eran sus amigos.
Junto al destructor ARA “Bouchard”, el “Piedrabuena” salió a proteger a su buque insignia y a buscar al submarino enemigo.
—Comenzamos un acortinado alrededor del buque y a lanzar bombas y más bombas de profundidad, con el riesgo de también ser atacados. Y pensás: “Los muchachos están tirándose en este momento a una balsa y nosotros en cualquier momento podemos estar en la misma situación”. Ahí te das cuenta de en qué baile estás.

Una anotación: “…siendo las 16,53 hs. y estando a 22 millas del crucero lo pierdo en la pantalla (…) para mí, se ha hundido…”. Gramaccioli lo escribió en su libreta 100 hojas de tapas negras que usaba de diario personal y que todavía conserva.
Con el “Belgrano” desaparecido ya del radar y sin haber encontrado al submarino, el “Piedrabuena” vuelve al lugar del hundimiento a buscar náufragos. Son las 2 de la mañana y hay una neblina y un pesto terribles. Y una escena desalentadora: pedazos de carcasas de balsas, pero ninguna en la zona.
—Pensamos: “Se fueron todos a pique con el barco”.
Habían hecho los cálculos de deriva, viento y corriente marina y les daban que las balsas iban al sudeste; pero lo real era que iban al sur derecho.
A las 14 del otro día, un avión Neptune da la primera localización de las balsas.
—Fue una alegría que nos cambió el ánimo. Me fui a trabajar para rescatar a los náufragos. Quería colaborar y ver si aparecían mis amigos.
—Éramos compinches, compañeros del taquillero frente al Puesto 1 de Puerto Belgrano donde guardábamos la ropa. Vivíamos juntos y jugábamos juntos al fútbol: Fernando Dorgambide, Julio César Tello y Jorge Antonio Yacante.
Los perdió en el hundimiento.
El destructor “Piedrabuena” fue el primero en llegar al sitio del naufragio y el último en irse. Se quedaron pintando las balsas que sólo llevaban tripulantes muertos para que las levantasen los buques hospitales ARA “Almirante Irízar” y “Bahía Paraíso” y lograron rescatar una con los últimos 16 tripulantes vivos, al borde de morir por congelamiento.
Entre ellos estaba el cabo segundo Hugo Gorosito, el último rescatado:
—Lo recuerdo porque no podía subir. Estaba totalmente congelado de la cintura para abajo, todo entumecido. Le gritábamos que se agarrara y no podía. Se tiró uno de los nadadores de rescate y lo enganchó con el arnés para que lo pudiéramos levantar.
Gorosito sobrevivió y le costó casi un mes poder volver a caminar. Estuvo 21 días en descongelamiento y fue el último en irse del Hospital Naval Puerto Belgrano.
—Me gustaría ver la silueta del crucero “Belgrano” otra vez navegando frente a Mar del Plata.
—Es una lástima que un barco tan grande se haya muerto así, sin poder defenderse —dice—. Yo lo vi tirar y era impresionante lo que escupían esos cañones. Y duele mucho volver a Puerto Belgrano y ver ese espacio vacío en la dársena. Junto al portaviones, eran dos emblemas; tenían un muelle propio, era todo de ellos.
—Tenés un antes y un después del 82. Después de la guerra volví a vivir, a mi manera y mirando al sur. Cuántos tipos hoy no pueden disfrutar lo que yo disfruté, a pesar de haber vivido una guerra. Eso es gracias a la familia.
Nacido en Río Cuarto (Córdoba), Marcelo Gramaccioli llegó al “Piedrabuena” en diciembre de 1981 y su primera navegación la hizo el 2 de febrero a Ushuaia, 4 meses exactos antes del hundimiento del crucero ARA “General Belgrano”. Se retiró de la Armada en Mar del Plata, donde vive en la actualidad.
Dice que no puede estar lejos de los barcos: “En una de esas, este año agarro el bolso de abandono que siempre tengo armado y me prendo a navegar con Greenpeace. Aprendí mucho de ecología y medioambiente en el aviso ‘Castillo’, en la Antártida”.
En tierra se marea, se siente mal, necesita vivir el mar: “Soy barquero”.
